Moments of Reflection
This time of year always reminds me of the early days with my newborn. My kiddo was born in November 2021 during lockdown. There was nowhere to go, we had very little access to family and community, and my baby wouldn’t nap in a bassinet. So I walked, and he napped in a carrier bundled up close to me. Those snowy winter walks became a ritual that brought me solace and perspective, tenderness and connection during an extremely isolating time. I remember beams of sunlight breaking through the trees, the calm of empty streets, and the joy of run-ins with people I hadn’t seen in seemingly forever.
The days are short and cold again, and this has been a very hard year for many, but I am reminded that when the weight of the world feels heaviest, light can find its way through the darkness. With all we have faced this year, I believe the need for compassion and collaboration has never been clearer. It is in the spaces of compassion and collaboration that I found the most meaning in 2024.
It makes sense that so many cultural celebrations happen during winter. We need to hold space for the hard things, we need to rest, and we also need joy! My motto has always been the joy of being in service. I take my work seriously, but I don’t take myself too seriously, and I am so grateful to be surrounded by colleagues and partners who do the same.
Looking back on 2024, I’m deeply inspired by the extraordinary efforts across the charitable and nonprofit sectors. The McConnell team works alongside such incredible partners whose dedication and brilliance shine brightly. Thank you for everything you’ve done this year to strengthen the fabric of our communities during these challenging and often polarizing times.
As we transition into the new year, I wish you a restful holiday season. May 2025 bring renewed purpose, connection, and light into your life and work.
Warmly,
Jane Rabinowicz, President and CEO
