Hogan’s Alley Society

Background of the organization

Founded in 2017, Hogan’s Alley Society (HAS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of Vancouver’s local Black history and advocating for the revitalization of Hogan’s Alley, a historically Black neighborhood displaced in the 1970s. HAS has been instrumental in advancing the interests of the Black community and creating gathering spaces, including the establishment of the Hogan’s Alley Community Land Trust (CLT), which aims to develop affordable mixed-use buildings in partnership with the city.

Project description

In partnership with hua Foundation, Hogan’s Alley Society is working on a two-year project to repair and regenerate relationships between the Chinatown and Black communities of Vancouver. This collaboration includes an archival project that will document and share the histories of both communities, with the goal of fostering understanding and healing. The project will also involve planning future initiatives that promote cultural exchange, community-led programming, and anti-racism education. By strengthening their partnership with hua Foundation, HAS aims to create a more inclusive and equitable future for Vancouver’s diverse communities.
