Ready to Rent BC

Background of the organisation:

Ready to Rent BC (R2R) was founded in 2011 by a group of citizens and service agencies in the Victoria region who came together to find solutions for families that were homeless or precariously housed. Its team of community-based educators delivers courses to tenants and landlords, building knowledge, skills and understanding about tenant rights and responsibilities.

Grant Description:

While considerable emphasis has been placed on solving homelessness in Canada after it occurs, comparatively little attention has been paid to its prevention. Many vulnerable people struggle to obtain and hold on to rental housing because they do not understand their rights and responsibilities as tenants. Ready to Rent’s (R2R) landlord and tenant education programs address these gaps. Having helped over 2,600 individuals to secure decent, stable housing, they have expanded to nearly 60 cities in five provinces. Most of this increase has occurred in the past year, and the organization is requesting the Foundation’s assistance in consolidating this growth. A grant from the Foundation will assist R2R in adapting its programs and staffing to better meet market demands. R2R will also build a three-pillar strategy to support their continued growth. It will consist of a learning network, tailored coaching for marginalized groups and an evaluation that will document the program’s impact on housing stability.
