Gaagige Zaagibigaa

Background of the organization

Gaagige Zaagibigaa (GZ) is a grassroots initiative based in Northern Ontario that emerged from over a decade of community-led work on food sovereignty. Hosted by Makeway, GZ supports household-level food security and the revitalization of traditional food practices through small grants, workshops, and knowledge-sharing with Elders and regional food leaders.

Project description

This contribution will help Gaagige Zaagibigaa strengthen its organizational foundation over the next five years. In addition to continuing its seasonal regranting program—which supports purchases like freezers, canners, and hunting supplies—GZ will focus on building internal capacity, strategic planning, and staffing. The goal is to position the organization for long-term sustainability and potential transition into a standalone charity.
