Aura Freedom International

Background of the organization

Aura Freedom is a grassroots women’s organization that works to eradicate gender-based violence (GBV) against women and human trafficking through advocacy, education, training and movement building. Their aim is to shift how GBV is represented in Canadian media by replacing sensationalized coverage with survivor-centered reporting that better reflects root causes, such as gender inequality and racism, and prevents further harm to survivors.

Project description

Funding will support the next phase of Gender-Based Violence in the Media, moving from guideline development to institutional uptake in newsrooms and journalism education. Aura Freedom will bring together survivors, community organizations, journalists, media outlets, and faculty in collaborative sessions to build shared standards for survivor-centered reporting.
