Background of the organization

Founded in 1974, West Coast Environmental Law (WCEL) is a leading Canadian charity specializing in legal strategies that protect the environment and advance environmental justice. WCEL has decades of experience supporting litigation, policy reform and community‑driven legal action. Its teams have built strong national and international partnerships, including long-standing collaboration with Our Children’s Trust, and are recognized for advancing precedent‑setting cases that strengthen environmental rights and climate accountability in Canada.

Project description

Funding will support the Larose climate lawsuit as it proceeds to an eight‑week federal trial in October 2026. Contributions will cover non‑legal trial costs, including youth plaintiff travel and accommodation, counselling, expert witnesses, litigation technology and research for discovery. The project ensures youth are well prepared and supported while seeking a landmark ruling that the federal government must protect children’s Charter rights from climate‑related harms.
