In 2023, the McConnell Foundation committed to transfer $30M from our endowment to community-focused Indigenous-led foundations, beginning with $10M to the Indigenous Peoples Resilience Fund (IPRF). To explore this emerging practice further, we partnered with researchers at the Canadian Philanthropy Partnership Research Network (PhiLab) to look at how funders in North America are using capital transfers and other innovative tools in their work.
The brief below summarizes this research on innovative practices in grantmaking and capital transfers. The full reports (on typology and case studies) are available on PhiLab’s website. We hope that by sharing this research we can offer the sector some highlights and suggestions for best practices for philanthropic funders interested in learning more about these opportunities.
