Young Agrarians

Background of the organization

Young Agrarians is a farmer-led network supporting ecological farmers across Western Canada. With a strong focus on equity-deserving groups—such as Indigenous, Black, immigrant, women, and 2SLGBTQ+ farmers—YA offers training, mentorship, and policy advocacy to help new farmers overcome systemic barriers in agriculture.

Project description

This contribution will support YA’s national policy advocacy to advance a New Entrant Farmer Strategy focused on equity-deserving farmers. YA is leading work at the federal level through its role as chair of the Underrepresented Groups working table in negotiations for the next Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The goal is to ensure that future federal agriculture funding frameworks include targeted supports—such as microgrants, land access initiatives, and small loan programs—for new farmers who face the greatest barriers to entry.
