Background of the organization
Passamaquoddy Recognition Group Inc (PRGI) is a nonprofit organization representing the interests of the Passamaquoddy people in Canada. The Passamaquoddy are federally recognized in the United States and maintain lands and communities in present-day Maine but they remain without equivalent recognition or a land base in Canada despite deep historical and cultural ties to New Brunswick. This province has limited Crown land available for transfer, so the organization sees community land trusts as a pathway to rebuild Indigenous stewardship and land ownership.
Project description
PRGI will establish and steward a community land trust to receive land currently held by Nature Trust of New Brunswick. Funding will allow them to work with Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Incorporated (MTI), a community consultation group, to develop the governance, legal, and organizational structures to own, protect, and steward the land under Indigenous leadership.
