Background of the organization

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) advances First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through policy development, public education and co-development of legislation. The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) strengthens Indigenous Nations to assert and implement their inherent and constitutionally protected title and rights. Chiefs of Ontario (COO) supports all 133 First Nations in Ontario, as they assert their sovereignty, jurisdiction, and their chosen expression of nationhood. The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) acts as the political voice of the Chiefs of the 43 First Nations of Quebec and Labrador.

Project description

ANF will create a First Nations-led plan for economic reconciliation centered on land. UBCIC will create a public education campaign and an action plan to help people across Canada understand why redress is a necessary part of justice and economic prosperity. COO will create a secure digital archive for stories relevant to First Nations in Ontario. AFNQL will set up a First Nations Self-Determination Office.
