True Sport Foundation

Background of the organization

The True Sport Foundation (TSF) has evolved over the last decade from a campaign that promoted drug-free sport into a national organization dedicated to ensuring that sport makes a positive contribution to Canadian society. The TSF plays an important role in promoting and celebrating participation in sport according to True Sport principles that emphasize character building and community participation.

Full Grant description:

With the Foundation’s support, the True Sport Community Fund (TSCF) demonstrated that small grants directed to vulnerable populations can increase youth participation in community sports programs – reinforcing healthy lifestyles; nurturing civic engagement; and increasing community fitness and vitality.

A grant from the Foundation will enable the True Sport Foundation and Community Foundations of Canada to introduce community sport granting programs into 15 community foundations. This initiative will influence their philanthropic strategy, reinforcing the shift from passive granting to being a partner in community building.

The TSF will provide matching funding for community sport grants and coaching on how to implement a community sport fund based on True Sport principles. CFC will ensure knowledge transfer within the CFC network so that other foundations will be inspired to emulate the early adopters. It is expected that over time some community foundations will formalize this commitment by setting up community sport endowment funds.
