Background
Founded in 1987, Tetra Society of North America helps people with physical disabilities lead active and independent lives. With the help of volunteers and a network of university and college partners, Tetra has designed and built over 6,000 individually customized assistive devices that help people with disabilities perform daily functions.
Full Description
A Social Innovation Fund grant from the Foundation complements contributions from several other funders, and will enable Tetra to establish a business with the potential to improve thousands of lives. With the Foundation’s grant, Tetra will undertake product and market research and development for current prototypes such as “TetraLites”, a safety lighting system for wheelchairs, as well as other products such as a backpack retriever and a wheelchair wheel cleaner. Funding will also enable Tetra to strengthen its sales team and produce marketing material. Additional contributions from the National Research Council of Canada, Western Economic Diversification, licensing agreements as well as earned revenue will be used to support salaries, office space and business development.
