Background of the Org:
The Mowat Centre is an independent, non-partisan public policy organization located at the School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Toronto. Mowat NFP undertakes research and analysis on priority issues facing Canada’s
not-for-profit sector. The centre also seeks to improve the way government and other organizations create, share and use evidence for decision making. Since its establishment in 2012, Mowat NFP has developed a proven track record for engaging government in broad and meaningful policy conversations.
A grant from the McConnell Foundation will support Mowat NFP in developing its policy,
research and convening activities over the next three years. In particular, it will assess the policy innovations and conditions needed to strengthen, accelerate and scale up the not-for-profit sector’s innovative capacity and potential with the ultimate goal of improving individual and community well-being. This assessment involves looking at long-standing issues relating to how governments and the not-for-profit sector work together. The research agenda connected to this grant will focus on the legal and regulatory environment for non-profits, strengthening organizational capacity, access to finance and funding, data and information and social innovation.
