Black Urbanism Toronto

Background of the organization

Black Urbanism Toronto (BUTO), founded in 2018 by Black urban planning and community development scholars, works to protect and revitalize Little Jamaica, a historically significant Black neighborhood in Toronto. The organization has played a key role in raising awareness of the vulnerabilities facing Little Jamaica, including successful advocacy for its designation as a historical district.

Project description

Funding will support Black Urbanism Toronto’s efforts to establish the Little Jamaica Community Land Trust (CLT). The project includes organizing town halls, offering mentorship, and providing education on CLTs to foster community engagement and advocacy. These efforts will lay the foundation for the CLT and help ensure that Little Jamaica remains a thriving cultural and economic hub for the Black community.
